Enneagram Type Seven

The Epicure is characterised by their pursuit of pleasure and avoidance of discomfort. They are spontaneous, engaging and skilled at multitasking to an extreme degree. They have a high-energy and upbeat demeanour, always desiring to keep all options open.

They are known for generating enthusiasm, pushing boundaries and avoiding painful experiences by coming up with new ideas. They find excitement in engaging with people and activities that inspire them and have a knack for positively reframing negative experiences. However, many struggle to focus on one thing at a time, constantly shifting their attention to whatever interests them. Their contagious optimism stems from a belief that everything is possible.

Core motivation

The search for pleasure, stimulation and avoidance of pain and discomfort is their primary motivation. They rely on their internal locus of control and prioritise what pleases them.

Common challenges

However, this pursuit of pleasure can lead to specific challenges. They may prioritise short-term gains over long-term well-being, experience losses due to constantly pursuing excitement and become overwhelmed by their desire for stimulation. Trying to do too much may result in a loss of purpose, leading to anxiety and depression. The Epicure may also become distracted from their deeper commitments, repeat mistakes and struggle when confronted with equal authority.

These challenges can extend to others, as they may come across as self-centred and unreliable due to their preoccupation with themselves. Others may feel overshadowed by their superior positions and experience pain due to a lack of commitment. Additionally, their tendency to downplay pain and conflict can trivialise the suffering and concerns of those around them.

Encouraging growth and development

To support the self-development of Epicures’, they need to recognise when they are indulging in excesses and work towards making deep commitments. Accepting all aspects of life, both pleasurable and painful, is crucial for their growth. Practices such as meditation, a powerful tool for self-awareness and focusing on a single point can aid their development, bringing a sense of calm and centeredness. They can also benefit from focusing on one task at a time, letting go of some options and embracing the liberation that comes with having fewer choices. It is essential for them to recognise and address any tendencies towards superiority and to welcome conflicts and criticisms as opportunities for growth.

How to support the Epicure

Providing support and encouragement for the Epicure in their self-development and appreciating the value of all individuals can significantly assist their journey. Creating a supportive environment that encourages them to face difficult situations, commit to their responsibilities, and prioritise their needs is also essential.
